JOINERY & CABINETRY
BOOKCASE
For this project we were commissioned by a rare book collector to design and make a bespoke bookcase to house and display his growing collection. Due to the nature of the client’s and his wife’s professional lives, which involve frequent moves between homes and countries, the brief required the piece to be fully transportable and easily assembled and disassembled.
The resulting design combines modular construction with robust joinery, allowing the bookcase to be dismantled without compromising structural stability or visual presence. A further requirement was that the piece should sit comfortably among the client’s existing furniture, largely composed of solid timber pieces from the American Arts and Crafts movement. The design therefore draws on the material honesty, proportion, and structural expression characteristic of that tradition while incorporating a contemporary, demountable construction strategy.
